Griesheim cemetery
The Griesheim cemetery is the cemetery in the Griesheim district of the city of Frankfurt am Main .
The cemetery with the address Waldschulstraße 79 borders the Eberhard-Wildermuth settlement , has an area of 4.5 hectares and offers space for 3,300 graves. It was opened on April 1, 1897. It is a listed building as a whole. In addition, the objects mentioned below and a large number of graves are under monument protection.
Entrance portal
The neoclassical entrance portal was based on the classical portal to the Frankfurt main cemetery . The building was probably built according to a design by the Frankfurt architect Jean Carl Heinrich Gramm . The client was the Griesheim-Elektron chemical factory . It is a single-yoke propylon of the Tuscan order in memory of 26 workers killed in an explosion on April 24, 1901 at the plant. The surrounding walls are adorned with meander friezes. On the inside there are bronze plaques with the names of the dead. The gable, which was destroyed in World War II , was not rebuilt.
Victim of labor
The victim of the work is a collective burial site commissioned by IG Farben , Griesheim plant for workers who have been killed in the plant since 1917. The monument in the form of a cube was created according to the designs of a sculpting class by Prof. Richard Lisker . Around the cube there are lying stone slabs with the names of the deceased.
Warrior Memorial
In the cemetery there is the war memorial based on a design by Heiner Hamburger and Paul Anton Seiler from 1920 in the form of a lying cross. The memorial is a horticultural complex with 96 podium stones around a central monumental lying cross with the names of the war dead. Lying warriors by the Frankfurt sculptor Paul Anton Seiler flank the stairway access to the memorial, which was ceremoniously opened on November 24, 1929. The overall design comes from the Frankfurt architect Heiner Hamburger.
Monument 1870/71
The memorial for the Franco-Prussian War 1870/71 is a classicist obelisk from 1897.
Columbaria
The columbarium on the cemetery wall is a three-bay, temple-like complex with extending side wings for a total of 56 urns in neoclassical shapes. It was built in 1914 by the Griesheim cremation association founded in 1911.
On the opposite side of the cemetery, at the north wall, a new columbarium for 304 urns was built in 1924. The U-shaped facility was expanded in 1957 to include walls for a further 96 urns.
The Cullmann grave (Gewann A, grave 54), a neo-Gothic sandstone cross from 1855, serves as a collection point for expired urns from the columbarium. The cross was probably moved from the cemetery (Nathal-Trier-Straße) that existed between 1832 and 1877.
memorial
At the intersection of the main paths of tubs A, B, C and D, a memorial was erected on the base of a crucifix that was destroyed in World War II. It consists of iron U-profiles and bears the inscription "To the victims 1939–1945". The memorial plaque was designed by Knorr in 1982.
