Guido Zimmermann (born November 17, 1978 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German artist from the street art scene , in which he is known under the pseudonym GZ .

Life

Zimmermann started out as a graffiti artist in 1993 . The spectrum of his work ranges from large-scale wall paintings in public spaces to painting on canvases and sculptures .

In 2015 he initiated the Museum on the Street project in his hometown , supported by the Aventis Foundation. Six wall paintings have already been realized as part of the project. In 2016 the artworks Menage a trois and Bulle vs. Bär von Zimmermann, in 2017 the Munich-based Rafael Gerlach (pseudonym SatOne ) created a mural , followed by two murals on a building in 2017 - a cooperation between Zimmermann and the Frankfurt artist Mis.Sare. In 2018, the internationally active artist HNRX from Austria painted the last mural for the project so far.

Zimmermann's sculptures, the cuckoo blocks , are internationally known . The miniature editions, especially those of brutalist buildings , are equipped with a cuckoo clock mechanism. The Cuckoo Blocks often stage historically interesting buildings and structures with an architectural value, such as Ernő Goldfinger's Glenkerry House in London or the Hotel “La Flaine” in the French Alps by Marcel Breuer and the Hotel Iveria in Tbilisi . With the sculptures depicting high-rises in Frankfurt, Berlin and Hamburg, Zimmermann also wants to draw attention to the living and housing conditions in socially disadvantaged areas in cities: the classic cuckoo clock symbolizes the prosperity of the middle class. The new prefabricated building version is intended to illustrate the current urban and social life in apartment blocks. Zimmermann has expanded the series of cuckoo blocks to include the social tit burrow , a nesting box for native songbirds in the form of a Sicilian social building in Catania , as well as the insect hotel Sozialbienenbau , the miniature structure of the Kin Ming in Hong Kong .
