Universitario Popayán was a Colombian football club from Popayán , Cauca , founded in 2011 , which played in the Categoría Primera B from 2011 to 2019 .

history

Universitario Popayán was the successor association of Centauros Villavicencio , who had great financial difficulties and whose owner wanted to make a fresh start in Popayán under a new name. In Popayán the support of the regional government of the Cauca was guaranteed. The change of location took place in May 2011.

The first year in the second division the club had to play under the name Centauros for legal reasons , as the season had already started. The club has been playing under its current name since 2012. In the Torneo Finalización 2011 , the club reached the final under the name Centauros, but lost it to Deportivo Pasto . In 2012 Universitario reached the group stage twice, but could not qualify for the final. In the 2013 season , however, the club found itself at the bottom of the table and was last in the overall table. In both half-series of the 2014 season , the club could not move into the final round.

The 2015 season was more successful. The club was able to qualify for the final round, in which he was last in group A, but achieved a respectable success against group winners Atlético Bucaramanga . In 2016 , Popayán was again able to qualify for the final round. There, however, the club missed the chance to win the group and thus promotion early on.

In the series of the 2017 season, Universitario Popayán missed out on the eleventh place in the final round. The club even ended the return series in last place. In the 2018 season, Popayán also missed the finals in twelfth place. After the end of the season, the coach César Torres moved to Alianza Petrolera . Alejandro Guerrero was hired as his successor .

In March 2019 it was announced that Universitario Popayán will move to Cali in July 2019 and will re-establish the historical association Boca Juniors de Cali there . In the last half series as Universitario Popayán, the Apertura 2019 , the club played its home games at the Estadio Deportivo Cali in Palmira . The league phase was completed in 13th place.
