history
Pell City was founded in 1890 by railroad investors and named after George H. Pell of the Pell City Iron and Land Company who was one of the funders.
The city was incorporated on May 6, 1891, but was almost completely abandoned during the panic of 1893. It was revived in 1902 when Sumter Cogswell established the Pell City Manufacturing Company , which later became Avondale Mills . The production facility became a landmark that defines the appearance of the city until it burned down to the ground in February 2008. Pell City expanded in 1956 when the nearby towns of Eden and Oak Ridge were merged into the state.
The residences of Sumter Cogswell and Green Evans, the first mayor, are among the oldest buildings and date from the late 19th century. Most of the historical buildings in the city date from between 1902 and 1905.
Ashville in the northern part of St. Clair County was the county's only county seat from 1821 to 1907, but a constitutional amendment in 1907 established Pell City as the second county seat. For many years, St. Clair County was the only county in Alabama with two full county seats. Pell City is growing faster than Ashville, which is why the proximity to Interstate 20 and Logan Martin Lake also plays a role.
After a period of growth in the 1980s, Pell City decided to spin its schools out of the county school system. Pelly City Schools attend more than 4,500 students, divided into Pell City High School , Duran Junior High School , Duran South Elementary , Iola Roberts Elementary , Walter M. Kennedy Elementary , Coosa Valley Elementary, and Eden Elementary .
More recently, Pell City's population has grown rapidly and calculations based on census updates are approximately 16,000, excluding the unincorporated lakefront residential areas south of the city. This development was favored by the fact that Honda set up a new production facility on the northeastern city limits in nearby Lincoln and by opening a shopping center north of the highway, which includes shops from Walmart , Home Depot and Cracker Barrel as well as a cinema.
The National Register of Historic Places lists three historic districts in Pell City:
