Center Point is a city in Jefferson County in the state of Alabama in the United States .

Center Point is located in central Alabama in the southern United States.
Nearby places include Pinson (immediately to the north), Grayson Valley (immediately to the east), Birmingham (immediately south and west) and Tarrant (3 km to the west).
history
In 1816 the first settlers from North Carolina reached what is now the city. In 1871 a well and a log house were built, and the first shop followed later. Around the turn of the century, the place got its current name when a local shopkeeper was asked where his ordered goods should be transported and he gave this name because the place was halfway between the roads to Chalkville and Pinson . It consisted of a school and several shops. The first church was built in 1914, and a post office followed in 1938.
By the 1960s, Center Point became the largest unincorporated area in the United States, with a population of more than 60,000 . It was not until 2002 that the place received city status after a vote.

Center Point is traversed north to south by Alabama State Route 75 . About 4 kilometers south there is a connection to US Highway 11 and Interstate 59 . US Highway 31 runs 8 kilometers to the west , parallel to Interstate 65 .
Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport is approximately 6 kilometers to the southwest .
Demographics
The 2000 census showed a population of 22,784, divided between 8,826 households and 6,434 families. The population density was 1093 people per square kilometer. 72.9% of the population were white, 24.2% black, 0.6% Asian and 0.3% Indian. 1% were of a different ethnicity , 1% had two or more races, and 2.2% were Hispanic or Latin American. For every 100 women there were 90 men. The median age was 35 and the per capita income was 18,160 US dollars, which meant that 9.5% of the population lived below the poverty line.
By the 2010 census , the population had dropped to 16,921.
