Clay is a city in Jefferson County in the state of Alabama in the United States . In 2013 around 9,700 people lived here.

geography

Clay is located in central Alabama in the southern United States.

Nearby places include Grayson Valley (immediately to the southeast), Center Point (immediately to the south), Trussville (immediately to the east), Pinson (1 km to the west) and Alabama's capital city of Birmingham (2 km to the south).

history

The first settlers after the Indians reached the area around 1806, the settlement was initially called Shiloh's Beat . Due to the location on a heavily used railway line, more people quickly moved into the village. In 1878 a post office was founded and in the course of this the city was renamed clay (German clay , clay ) based on the nearby clay hills . In 2000 Clay was incorporated and later took Chalkville into the urban area.

About two miles southeast of the city is Interstate 59 , which runs 715 kilometers from Georgia to Louisiana . US Highway 11 also runs 5 kilometers southeast .

Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport is about 10 kilometers south .

Demographics

The 2010 census showed a population of 9708, divided between 3574 households and 2780 families. The population density was 185 people per square kilometer. 84.1% of the population were white, 13.3% black, 0.6% Asian and 0.3% American Indian. 0.6% were of a different ethnicity , 1.1% had two or more ethnicities, and 1.3% were Hispanics or Latin Americans of any ethnicity. For every 100 women there were 94 men. The median age was 40 years and the per capita income was 28,000 US dollars, with about 3.6% of the population living below the poverty line.

At the 2000 census , the population was 4947.
