HYT is the common abbreviation for H ue YT own in connection with sports, such as the high school football team that made the state play-offs in 2006 and 2007 . The softball team has become state champions a number of times.
Hueytown was the hometown of a racing group that dominated the NASCAR series, the Alabama Gang . The city's main thoroughfare, Allison-Bonnett Memorial Drive, takes its name from racing drivers Bobby , Donnie , Davey and Clifford Allison and Neil Bonnett . This also included the racing legend Charles "Red" Farmer .
BMW Motorsport chose Hueytown as its North American base of operations before completing its first season in an International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) racing series in 1975 .
