Babbie is a city in Covington County in the US state of Alabama .

geography

Babble is located in southern Alabama in the southern United States. It is about 10 kilometers northeast of the 340 square kilometer Conecuh National Forest and nearly 30 kilometers north of the Florida border .

Nearby places include Opp (immediately to the east), Horn Hill (2 km south), Andalusia (3 km west) and Kinston (11 km south-east). The next larger city with 205,000 inhabitants is the capital of Alabama, Montgomery, about 110 kilometers to the north .

history

The area was first settled in the 1830s, and the first church was built around 1851. The local economy was characterized early on by farms and agriculture, including a flour mill, a cotton mill, a sawmill and a feed factory. In 1901 the city was connected to the regional rail network and initially served as a demand stop . In 1902 a post office was opened.

traffic

US Highway 84 runs through the south of the city and connects a few kilometers east with US Highway 331 and a few kilometers west with US Highway 29 .

About 2 kilometers west of the city is the South Alabama Regional Airport .

Demographics

According to the 2000 census , Babbie had 627 residents, spread across 258 households and 192 families. The population density was 21 inhabitants / km². 98.88% of the population were white; 0.16% were African American. The median income was $ 26,328, with 14.8% of the population living below the poverty line .

By the 2010 census , the population had dropped to 603.
