The administrative seat ( county seat ) is Florence , named after the Italian hometown of Florence of the city planner and architect Ferdinand Sannoner . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located in the far northwest of Alabama on the right bank of the Tennessee River , which forms the border with Mississippi to the west . To the north it borders Tennessee . history
Lauderdale County was formed on February 6, 1818. It was named after Colonel James Lauderdale of Tennessee , who was fatally wounded on December 23, 1814 at the Battle of Talladega .
33 structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of April 3, 2020), with the Wilson Dam has the status of a National Historic Landmark .
