Sulligent is a 19th century city in Lamar County , Alabama , United States.
history
The city was first named Elliott after the chief engineer of the Kansas City-Memphis-Birmingham Railroad. A month later it was given its current name. The name of the city is composed of the prefix of the railway supervisor Sullivan and the suffix of the railway passenger representative Sargeant. The City was established in October 1887 incorporated . The production and processing of cotton was an important industry. The main business in Sulligent in the mid-1890s was cotton with over 2500 ginned bales per year that were transported by rail. At the time, the Sulligent Cotton Oil Company was known as the largest company for removing seeds from cotton fibers under one roof.

According to the 2000 census, the city has a population of 2151 inhabitants. In 2006 the United States Census Bureau estimated the population to be 1985, a decrease of 166 (-7.7%).
