The Montgomery County is a county in the US state of Mississippi . The county seat is Winona , which is named after a Sioux language expression that translates to firstborn daughter .

R. Montgomery

Montgomery County was formed on May 13, 1871 from parts of Carroll County and Choctaw County. It was named after Richard Montgomery , a general in the American Revolutionary War .

Seven buildings and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 2, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Montgomery County had 12,189 people in 4,690 households and 3,367 families. The population density was 12 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 54.25 percent white, 44.95 percent African American, 0.08 percent Native American, 0.25 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.07 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.3 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.85 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups.
