Raymond is a place in Hinds County in the US state Mississippi , about 20 kilometers southwest of the capital Jackson . Raymond belongs to the Jackson Metropolitan Statistical Area and, along with Jackson, is one of two county seats in Hinds County.
On May 12, 1863 there was a battle near Raymond between soldiers of the Confederate States and the Army of the Tennessee ( Union ). The battle was part of the Second Vicksburg Campaign in the American Civil War and ended in a victory for Union forces.
In 1903 the construction of a water tower began on the central square in the town center. Between 1857 and 1859 a courthouse, the Hinds County Courthouse , was built on this site , which is still responsible for county affairs to this day. In 1917 a small agricultural high school with 117 students was opened, which has grown over the years and has been known as Hinds Community College since 1987 . With over 12,000 students and six campuses, it is now the largest community college in Mississippi.
At the 2010 census , the city had 1933 inhabitants, of whom 849 were white and 1031 were black. In 2014 there were already 2177 inhabitants; this corresponds to a population growth of 30.8% in the period from 2000 to 2014.
The Raymond Post Office is operated by the United States Postal Service . There is also a juvenile correctional facility nearby , the Oakley Youth Development Center .
