The Claiborne County is a county in the US state of Mississippi . The county seat is Port Gibson , named after Samuel Gibson , who first built a dock for ships here.

The county is located in the southwest of Mississippi, borders Louisiana to the west , with the Mississippi forming the natural border. The Claiborne County and has an area of 1299 square kilometers, of which 38 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered by the following counties and parishes:

William Claiborne

Claiborne County was formed in 1802. It was named after William C. C. Claiborne (1772–1773), the first governor of Louisiana (1812–1816).

Two locations have National Historic Landmark status , the Oakland Memorial Chapel and the Port Gibson Battle Site . A total of 36 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 1, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Claiborne County had 11,831 people in 3,685 households and 2,531 families. The population density was 9 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 15.18 percent white, 84.11 percent African American, 0.05 percent Native American, 0.14 percent Asian and 0.10 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.41 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 0.79 percent of the population.

Of the 3,685 households, 34.8 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 36.5 percent were married couples living together, 26.9 percent were single mothers, and 31.3 percent were non-families. 28.0 percent of all households were single households and 10.9 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.72 and the average family size was 3.35 people.

26.3 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 23.1 percent between 18 and 24, 22.3 percent between 25 and 44, 17.9 percent between 45 and 64 years old, and 10.5 percent were 65 years or older . The median age was 26 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 85.7 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 81.4 males.

The average income of a household amounted to 22,615 USD , for a family is 29,867 USD. Males had a median income of $ 28,777 versus $ 20,140 for females. The per capita income was $ 11,244. About 27.9 percent of families and 32.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line .
