The Claiborne County is a county in the US state of Mississippi . The county seat is Port Gibson , named after Samuel Gibson , who first built a dock for ships here.

The county is located in the southwest of Mississippi, borders Louisiana to the west , with the Mississippi forming the natural border. history

William Claiborne

Claiborne County was formed in 1802. It was named after William C. C. Claiborne (1772–1773), the first governor of Louisiana (1812–1816).

Two locations have National Historic Landmark status , the Oakland Memorial Chapel and the Port Gibson Battle Site . A total of 36 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 1, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Claiborne County had 11,831 people in 3,685 households and 2,531 families. The population density was 9 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 15.18 percent white, 84.11 percent African American, 0.05 percent Native American, 0.14 percent Asian and 0.10 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.41 percent were descended from two or more races.
