history
Choctaw County was formed on December 23, 1833 from parts of Choctaw land. It was named after the Choctaw , a North American Indian people.

According to the 2000 census , Choctaw County had 9,758 people in 3,686 households and 2,668 families. The population density was 9 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 68.03 percent white, 30.68 percent African American, 0.31 percent Native American, 0.13 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.42 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.42 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.81 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups.
Of the 3,686 households, 32.6 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 53.3 percent were married couples living together, 14.6 percent were single mothers, and 27.6 percent were non-families. 25.0 percent of all households were single households and 12.2 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.06.
27.8 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 8.8 percent between 18 and 24, 24.9 percent between 25 and 44, 23.5 percent between 45 and 64 years old, and 15.0 percent were 65 years or older . The median age was 37 years. Statistically, for every 100 females there were 91.9 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 88.4 males.
The average income of a household amounted to 27,020 USD , for a family is 31,095 USD. Males had a median income of $ 26,966 versus $ 17,798 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,474. About 17.7 percent of families and 24.7 percent of the population were below the poverty line .
