Ackerman is a town and county seat of Choctaw County in the US state of Mississippi .
history
When the Illinois Central Railroad (ICRR) was completed in 1885 and ran south of today's metropolitan area, Ackerman was also founded. The city was named after an employee of the ICRR. Two years later a courthouse was built and the city was named the second administrative seat.
The population in Ackerman was growing rapidly, largely with the influx of people from Chester . Ackerman soon overtook French Camp and became the county's largest city . The development of the Gulf, Mobile and Ohio Railroad slowed growth.
