Friedrich Lösel

Friedrich Lösel (* 1945 ) is a German psychologist and criminologist and emeritus professor of psychology and criminology . He has received numerous international awards, including for his life's work.

life and work

Friedrich Lösel was Professor at the Institute for Psychology at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg from 1987 to 2011 and Director of the Criminological Institute at the University of Cambridge ( UK ) from 2005 to 2012. Before that, he was Professor of Psychology at the University of Bielefeld .

Lösel researched the causes and developments of hooliganism in a German and European comparison, violent and non-violent conflict resolution behavior in early adolescence, the avoidance of pre-trial detention among young people and the treatment of offenders in prison and in social therapy . In addition, he was in charge of a resilience project in Erlangen and Bielefeld, in which protective factors were determined that promote a psychologically healthy development of young people from the multi-problem environment. Since 2017 he has been leading a sub-project of the European Union- funded PROTON project on research into organized crime and terrorism, in which, among other things, risk and protective factors of extremist radicalization are examined. He has published over 400 journal articles and book chapters and is the editor and author of more than 30 books, themed issues and research reports.

Friedrich Lösel has received numerous international prizes, including the German Psychology Prize of the German Society for Psychology and the Stockholm International Prize in Criminology. He was also awarded an honorary doctorate from Glasgow Caledonian University and an honorary professor from the Universities at Chongqing and Hang Zhou .

He was a member of various national and international bodies, including the Federal Government's Violence Commission, President of the European Association of Psychology and Law (EAPL), President of the Criminological Society and member of the Chancellor's expert group in the dialogue about Germany's future.

Friedrich Lösel lives in Nuremberg and Cambridge .
