Career

1956 Summer Olympics

Monckton, who began training as a carpenter, was the top favorite to win the gold medal at the 1956 Summer Olympics because he was the first person to swim 400 meters in under five minutes in the national team competition in Townsville before the games. He also set world records over 110 and 220 yards freestyle.

At the Olympic Games in 1956, however, he only won the silver medal, although he swam the fastest times in the preliminary and semi-finals with 1: 04.1 min and 1: 03.4 min. He lost to his teammate David Theile in the final . Monckton swam at 1: 03.2 min, about one second slower than Theile (1: 02.2 min).

Commonwealth Games 1958

After Theile took time out to study medicine, John Monckton dominated the swimming scene at the 1958 Commonwealth Games . There he won gold over 110 yards back and with the 4 × 110 yard medley relay.

1960 Summer Olympics

Monckton was now preparing for the next 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome . Again he dominated the prelims, in which he again reached first place. After that, however, he declined, only reaching 4th place in the semifinals and finally only 7th place in the final. However, he failed to turn around and he broke his finger. After the 1960 Summer Olympics, Monckton increased his training schedule in hopes of reaching the 1964 Summer Olympics , but failed to do so after his performance deteriorated.
