Cayetano Carreño

José Cayetano Carreño (born August 7, 1774 in Caracas , † March 3, 1836 Caracas) was a Venezuelan composer .

Life

Carreño became organist in 1794 and conductor at the Cathedral of Caracas in 1796 . From 1792 to 1793 he taught music at the University of Caracas . After Padre Sojo's death , he followed him as a teacher at several music schools.

He composed numerous sacred works, including a Requiem (1806), a Salve Regina (1814) and several motets , the best known of which are In Monte Oliveri (1801) and Tristis anima mea . Several of his sons became known as musicians: Juan de la Cruz Carreño and Juan Bautista Carreño as composers and Ciriaco Carreño as singer and organist. His granddaughter Teresa Carreño (1853–1917), the daughter of his son Manuel Antonio Carreño , became a world-famous pianist.
