Padre Sojo

Padre Sojo ( Pedro Ramón Palacios Gil Arratia ; born January 17, 1739 at the Hacienda Sojo near Guatire , † 1799 in Caracas ) was a Venezuelan priest and music teacher. The cleric, who came from a wealthy family, was one of the most important promoters of Venezuelan music in the 18th century.

Padra Sojo studied at the Caracas Seminary and was ordained a priest in 1762. After a trip to Europe in 1769, he founded the Oratorio San Felipe Neri , which was dedicated to the cultivation of church music.

Around 1784 he founded the Academia de Música in Caracas, as its director he appointed Juan Manuel Olivares . In the thirteen years that the Academia existed until Olivares' death, it included José Ángel Lamas , Juan José Landaeta , Juan Francisco Landaeta , Cayetano Carreño , Isaza Velásquez , Juan José and José Antonio Caro de Boesi , Lino Gallardo , Bernabé Montero , Marcos Pompa , Juan Meserón , José Izaza , Atanasio Bello Montero , Pedro Pereira , Mateo Villalobos and Dionisio Montero among their students.
