history
Origin and colonial times
There is no set date for Guatire's founding. It slowly emerged from the settlements of peasants, slaves, and day laborers who worked in the haciendas that many Spaniards established in the area. In 1680 the Parroquia was founded by the Santa Cruz del Valle de Pacairigua. In 1768 a landowner, Margarita de Alvarenga, donated a piece of land to build a church and priestly house. The main church and 24 de Julio square are now there. During the colonial period and until 1874, Guatire was administered from Guarenas .
In the mid-18th century, many Guatire residents joined the revolt of Juan Francisco de León against the monopoly of the Guipuzcoana trading house.
Infrastructure
The El Rodeo prison complex is nearby.
