Bathurst
Bathurst [ˈbæθəst] is a city in the Australian state of New South Wales and is located about 200 km west of Sydney on the Macquarie River at an altitude of about 670 m.
Locality
Bathurst was founded in 1815 and is the oldest inland city in Australia . It is named after Henry Bathurst, 3rd Earl Bathurst . The city is one of the four main locations of Charles Sturt University . Bathurst is also the Australian center for touring car racing with the Mt. Panorama Racing Circuit .
Bathurst has a small airport and is on an important main road to Sydney . The city can also be reached by rail on the Sydney- Orange route .
Bathurst is the center and administrative seat of the Bathurst Region administrative area .
The Japanese city of Ōkuma has been its sister city since March 1991 .
Wiradjuri Aborigines
The area of Bathurst was originally the ancestral land of the Wiradjuri - Aborigines . They resisted European colonization so fiercely that the Governor Major General Sir Thomas Brisbane declared martial law. These violent clashes went down in Australian history as the Bathurst Wars . The leader of the Aboriginal Windradyne , who led the resistance in the 1820s, became famous.
