Edgar Sanabria

Edgar Sanabria (born October 3, 1911 in Caracas ; † April 24, 1989 ibid) was a Venezuelan lawyer, diplomat and politician and President of Venezuela from November 14, 1958 to February 13, 1959 .

He acted as interim president for Wolfgang Larrazábal, who resigned on November 14 because of the election campaign, and Rómulo Betancourt , the winner of the December 7 election , who took office on February 13.

Early years and career

His parents were Jesús Sanabria Bruzual and Teresa Arcia. He studied law at the Universidad Central de Venezuela and graduated in 1935 with a doctorate in political science. From 1936 to 1941 he worked, among other things, as a professor and (1936–1940) as a sub-director in the National Library. In 1941 he became a legal advisor in the Foreign Ministry as well as in the Ministry of Finance and Funding and in 1944 director of the Ministry of Education. In addition to the latter, he also taught at some universities from time to time.

After the fall of the dictator Marcos Pérez Jiménez , he was appointed secretary of the government junta, which took power on January 23, 1958.

Presidency

On November 14, 1958, Wolfgang Larrazábal gave him the presidency because of the election campaign. In the elections of December 7th, Rómulo Betancourt won the office, which he took up on February 13, 1959.

During his short term in office, Edgar Sanabria passed, among other things, a university law that guaranteed them their autonomy.

Last years

From 1959 to 1963 he was ambassador to the Vatican , from 1964 to 1968 in Switzerland , from 1968 to 1970 in Austria and then an honorary ambassador to the Foreign Ministry.
