Wolfgang Larrazábal Ugueto (born March 5, 1911 in Carúpano , † February 27, 2003 ) was an officer and 1958 President of Venezuela . After the overthrow of Marcos Pérez Jiménez on January 23, 1958, he was installed as transitional president until the November 14 elections .

Early years and career

His parents were Fabio Larrazábal and Jerónima Ugueto. After his school education he went to the naval school from 1928 to 1932. From 1942 to 1945 he commanded several warships and was then commander of the naval base in Puerto Cabello . In July 1947 he was promoted to commander of the armed forces and in 1949 sent to the embassy in Washington as a naval attaché .

Presidency

When Marcos Pérez Jiménez was overthrown on January 23, 1958, Wolfgang Larrazábal had been appointed commandant of the navy just three weeks earlier. Nevertheless, he was appointed interim president in the prevailing power vacuum.

Despite his short term in office, there were a few coup attempts against him, the bloodiest of them by the former minister Castro León on July 23 and 24, 1958. On November 14, he handed over his office to Edgar Sanabria to vote in the elections on December 7 ( in which he was second behind Rómulo Betancourt ) to run.
