Burkhard of Passau

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Burkhard (* unknown; † 915 ) was the 14th Bishop of Passau from 903 to 915 .

Burkhard was initially head of the Altötting Abbey and became Bishop of Passau around 903. In the same year he called a diocesan synod .

On September 8, 903, Burkhard certified the donation of vestments and some books by his choir bishop Madalwin to the Passau church. This document is the earliest document written by a Passau bishop and is therefore regarded as the first Passau bishop's charter.

In 907 he supported the campaign of King Ludwig and Count Luitpold against the Hungarians. Burkhard accompanied the king to Enns. When the two there received news of the defeat in the Battle of Pressburg (July 6, 907) and the death of Luitpold, Burkhard fled to Passau with the king.
