Ulrich I. von Passau also Udalrich (* around 1027; † August 7, 1121 in Passau ) was a monastery founder and bishop of the Diocese of Passau .

Life

As can also be seen in the adjacent picture, it was previously assumed that he came from Tyrol . Later its origin was probably ascribed to a Swabian or Bavarian noble family.

He was Provost of Augsburg and was appointed Bishop of Passau in 1092 . He is said to have been 65 years old at the time. Since the opposing bishop Thiemo, appointed by Emperor Heinrich IV , resided in Passau , he stayed in the east of the diocese, where he was protected by Leopold II from Babenberg . From 1103 to 1105 he had to leave his diocese entirely and fled to the Bavarian canons of Rottenbuch .

When he was able to return to his diocese, he restored the St. Nikola monastery founded by Bishop Altmann in 1111 . He donated his Mertingen estate to the Passau Cathedral Monastery and founded the Canons' Monastery of St. Georgen an der Traisen in 1112 , which was later relocated to Herzogenburg . He supported the establishment of the Seitenstetten Monastery and converted the Garsten and Göttweig Monasteries into Benedictine monasteries .
