Dominican monastery in Friesach

The Dominican monastery in Friesach stands outside the current city walls in the north of Friesach .

history

In 1216, Hyazinth von Polen founded the first branch of the Dominican Order in the German-speaking area in Friesach . The monastery was located in the so-called sack next to the Holy Blood Church in the south of the city. By order of Archbishop Philipp von Spanheim , a new building was built in 1255 at the current location outside the old city walls. In 1264, Bishop Dietrich II von Gurk consecrated an All Saints Chapel. The monastery was badly damaged by fire in 1637. Because of the solid economic base and the school and pastoral activities, the monastery escaped being dissolved in the course of the Josephine reforms , but it was already closed in 1797, during the time of the Napoleonic occupation of Carinthia. The building now served as an arsenal and military hospital. In the middle of the 19th century the facility was in a ruinous state. In 1889 the Dominicans returned to Friesach and in 1892 they re-established a formal branch of the order.

At the end of 2015 the sale of the monastery and church was announced. The monastery was bought by a costume manufacturer that had its workshops in the monastery before. The buyer of the church has not yet been announced.
