The Redemptorist College Leoben was a Redemptorist monastery in the city of Leoben in Styria until 2010 and is a listed building and is used as a student residence. The monastery church is dedicated to St. Consecrated to Alfonso Liguori . On November 9, 2014, the Redemptorist Church of St. Alfons was handed over to the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Austria.

history

In 1834 a Redemptorist hospice was set up in Leoben. The revolution in 1848 led to the abolition of the religious order and the Fathers did not return until 1853 and continued the construction of a church and the monastery that had already started, so that on November 9, 1854 the monastery church in honor of St. Alfons could be moved into. The monastery was a mission house and retreat house and temporarily housed the novitiate of the Redemptorist order.

The church was built from 1846 to 1847 and the monastery from 1847 to 1848 according to the plans of the architect Alois Haberkalt. The neo-Romanesque church has a cruciform floor plan. The main facade with a facade ridge turret has two niches with the statues of Saints Peter and Paul. The roof turret is octagonal on the upper floor and wears a pointed helmet.

The high altar from 1860 has a late baroque tabernacle with adoring angels. The apse painting was painted by the painter Leopold Schultz (1860). The side altars show the images of Immaculate and St. Josef the painter Leopold Till (1855) and carry sculptures by the painter and sculptor Josef Veiter . The wall painting in the oratory above the sacristy was painted by Johann Max Tendler (1857).
