Family coat of arms of Heinrich IV. Von Volkerstorf from 1331, after Johann Siebmacher

The Volkenstorfer (Volkersdorfer) were one of the oldest and noble noble families in Upper Austria . Their home area was the district court between the rivers Enns and Traun . In the 12th century they became the ministerial of the Styrian margraves . As a result, you were enfeoffed with the Hereditary Stewardship of the House of Austria.

Volkenstorfer and Gleinker

1120 a Durinc appears as the common ancestor of the Gleinker and the Volkenstorfer. Arnhalm I was the first of the Volkenstorf family to appear as a witness in a deed of donation from the Otakare von Steyr . This Volkenstorfer founded the Gleink monastery around 1120 and relocated his castle to the area of today's Volkersdorf . His son Arnhalm II is mentioned as a witness in 1151 in an exchange contract between Bishop Konrad von Passau and the monasteries of Gleink and Stift Seitenstetten . His son Otto I is named in numerous documents from Margrave Otakar IV of Steyr and Duke Leopold between 1170 and 1192 .

In the fourth generation detectable the side line of the split with Herbort (around 1200) Wolfgerstorfer from. At the end of the 13th century the family was divided into three lines, one of which resided in Kreuzen , one in Neuhofen- Gschwendt and the third in Volkersdorf . The Neuhofen line went to 1349 with Heinrich III. von Volkenstorf to an end, whereby the ownership of Neuhofen and Gschwendt passed to Otto IV. von Kreuzen. The Kreuzner line died in 1478 with Hadmar IV from Volkenstorf.

The male line in Volkersdorf died in 1616 with Wolf Wilhelm II from Volkenstorf. The latter was an avowed Protestant , he was also governor of the Enns from 1610 until the end of his life . He had tried to pass his coat of arms and possessions on to the eldest sons of his daughters, but none of them had a son. The first successors were the lords of Gera. Since these were Protestants who did not want to distance themselves from their confession, they were arrested in 1621 after the occupation of Austria ob der Enns by Duke Maximilian of Bavaria and, after their pardon, had to emigrate first to Regensburg and then to Nuremberg . In 1629, Katharina von Volkenstorf, in agreement with her daughters, sold the people of Volkenstorf with Stein and Weißenberg to Count Werner t'Serklaes von Tilly. The latter had Volkenstorf Castle demolished and Tillysburg Castle built near the former castle site .
