In 1807 the monastery came to the Archdiocese of Salzburg. It is the oldest still existing secular priest community in Austria. In this monastery a provost as head, 11  canons and up to four honor canons form a spiritual community, which meets at least twice a year. During the rest of the year, the canons are in their parishes, where they serve as pastors. The parishes are not subordinate to the Mattsee Abbey, but to the Archbishop of Salzburg or the Bishop of Linz.

Today's collegiate church is the fourth church building that stands in the same place as the founding church from the 8th century and is dedicated to the Archangel Michael. The Gothic building was decorated in baroque style with stucco and frescoes at the beginning of the 18th century. The 60 m high tower of the church is also called "Goliath des Mattiggaues" and was built in 1766 according to plans by Wolfgang Hagenauer . The choir stalls from around 1650, the high altar from around 1730 and the many epitaphs in the church and the cloister are worth seeing .

Propstei

In the provost's office, the former residence of the provost, there is now a restaurant, museum and cultural center with a concert hall. The works in the Stiftsmuseum include three pictures by the artist Johann Michael Rottmayr , an astronomical clock and a late Gothic Madonna. The oldest document on Salzburg soil is in the archive of the monastery, a deed of donation from Ludwig the German from the year 860.

Wine cellar

Furthermore, the monastery still owns a winery in the Wachau and sells its home-made wines in a street sale in the historic wine cellar in Mattsee.
