Leonhard Steinwender (born September 19, 1889 in Tamsweg , † August 22, 1961 in Mattsee ) was an Austrian clergyman , resistance fighter against National Socialism , prisoner in Buchenwald concentration camp and canon in Salzburg .

Life

Leonhard Steinwender attended grammar school and then studied Roman Catholic theology in Salzburg. In 1912 he received by John Baptist Cardinal Katschthaler the priesthood . He then worked as a cooperator in Brixlegg and as a pastor in Nonntal . From 1915 to 1917 he edited a church gazette, and from 1917 to 1938 he was the editor of the Salzburg Chronicle . Politically, he was active in the Christian Social Party . From 1927 he was a canon in the Mattsee Collegiate Foundation . Because of his resistant articles, which were directed against the “Anschluss” of Austria , he was sent to a Gestapo prison on March 12, 1938 for “ protective custody ” . In November 1938 he was sent to the Buchenwald concentration camp and assigned to the painter's command. During this time, when he also learned about the suffering of other Christian fellow prisoners, he wrote his poem about the "Cross": It begins with the line "Do you want to steal the cross?" And ends with "You will never get the cross!"

In November 1940 he was released from the concentration camp and was banned from the district. From 1940 to 1945 he worked as a vicar in Petting ( Upper Bavaria ). When the Nazi regime was eliminated, he took up residence in Mattsee Abbey from 1945 . Here he became one of the founders of the Rupertibote in 1946 . He was a member of the Catholic student associations KÖStV Austria Vienna and KÖHV Rheno-Juvavia Salzburg.

After his death he got his resting place in the canons' crypt of the Mattsee Abbey. A plaque in the chapter vault keeps the testimony of Canon Steinwender for his faith and his church alive.
