After he attended the University of Vienna the title Dr. jur. Glossy joined the City of Vienna in 1874. In 1881 he became curator of the municipal collections and in 1891 director of the municipal library . There he acquired in-depth historical knowledge in the course of his work. After the Fröhlich sisters died , Glossy took up Grillparzer's estate and published many documents from the archive. In the yearbook of the Grillparzer Society , which he published, he had numerous articles about the poet appear. With the publication of Raimund's works, as well as Schreyvogel's and Bauernfeld's diaries, he made fundamental contributions to the knowledge of the Austrian Vormärz . Glossy opened up many sources and documents, especially on the history of censorship . From 1904 he ran the " Österreichische Rundschau ", a cultural magazine, together with Alfred Freiherr von Berger .

On March 9, 1928, Karl Glossy was made an honorary citizen of the City of Vienna . In 1952 Glossystraße in Vienna- Penzing (14th district) was named after him.
