Johann Baptist Jenger (born March 23, 1793 in Kirchhofen near Freiburg , † March 30, 1856 in Vienna ) was an Austrian civil servant and musician from the circle of Franz Schubert .

Life

Jenger was from 1818-1825 as an adjunct in the k. k. Field Chancellery in Graz and was involved in the board of the Steiermärkischer Musikverein . Jenger has also emerged as a pianist and organist.

Since his transfer to Vienna, he has been the director of the law firm of the local music association . He was the piano accompanist for Carl von Schönstein and often played with Schubert or in his presence. The organization of a musical evening with the performance of Schubert's last three piano sonatas and songs (on September 27, 1828 with Dr. Ignaz Menz) goes back to Jenger, to whom Schubert's last private letters have been handed down from September and October 1828. Around 1830 Jenger wrote a biographical sketch about Anselm Hüttenbrenner .

Jenger was close friends with the brothers Hüttenbrenner and the family Marie , Karl and Faust Pachler in Graz as well as the castle actress Sophie Müller and the draftsman and lithographer Joseph Teltscher .

  1. According to the ÖBL (see link) and almost all of Schubert and Beethoven literature, Jenger is said to have been born in 1792 (or 1797), but the prayer book of Jenger's father Anton Jenger (1760–1840) clearly records the year 1793. On Karl Becker already refers to this error, s. Lit., p. 16. And finally, the necrological entry on Jenger in the Wiener Zeitung points to 1793, since his age is given as "63".
