Carl Freiherr von Schönstein (born June 27, 1796 in Ofen , Hungary ; † July 19, 1876 Aussee , Styria ) was an Imperial and Royal civil servant and singer ( tenor-baritone ).

Life

Schönstein was the son of the Imperial and Royal Court Councilor Franz Xaver von Schönstein and Albertine nee. from Roussel. From 1813 he was an intern at Pest County and the Hungarian Lieutenancy, and from April 1, 1816 a concept intern at the General Court Chamber in Vienna. On September 11th, 1823 he was appointed Imperial Court Concepter.

From 1845 Schönstein was married to Rosalia von Kleyle, the sister of the writer Sophie von Löwenthal (a childhood sweetheart of Ludwig Ritter von Köchel ). Schönstein had a slightly higher tenor baritone than the first great Schubert interpreter Johann Michael Vogl, who he regarded as a teacher and role model .

During Schubert's stays in Zelis with the Esterházy family in 1818 and 1824, Schubert met Schönstein and valued him as the ideal interpreter of his songs. The first print of the cycle Die Schöne Müllerin is dedicated to Schönstein. Leopold von Sonnleithner described him as “perhaps the best Schubert singer” and certified the interpreter, who was only referred to as an “art lover”, “adequate vocal training” as well as “aesthetic and scientific education and a fine, lively feeling”.
