Origin and education

The son of the middle-class Fragners Johann Michael Vogl worked for the Steyr ship master Carl Selhammer and lost his parents at an early age. His father had bought Anton Klausriegler's house in Ennsdorf in 1760 and was granted citizenship on his questioning (grocery shop). After the father's death, a brother took over the upbringing of the boy. He received music lessons from the tenor Strausberger and the Regenschori Kagel.

Due to his talent, he was employed as a paid soprano singer at the parish church of Steyr at the age of nine . From 1781 he attended the Stiftsgymnasium Kremsmünster in Kremsmünster . Here he was immediately hired as a choirboy, whereby his musical and acting skills received great attention from the fathers. He was also a good student, however, who completed his high school education and philosophical studies with honors.

In 1785 he went to Vienna with Franz Xaver Süßmayr , whom he had met during his time in Kremsmünster, where he first studied law and successfully completed his university studies. He also received singing lessons from the castrato Girolamo Crescentini .

In 1794, with the help of Süßmayr, he became a court opera singer at the Theater am Kärntnertor , where he worked as a singer, actor and even as a director, his specialty being the roles in operas by Mozart and Christoph Willibald Gluck .

Vogl, baritone , soon became one of the most important singers and actors in opera theater, including roles as Orestes in Gluck's Iphigenie auf Tauris (which was first performed in German in 1781 in Vienna), Almaviva in Mozart's Figaro , and Jacob Friborg in the Swiss Family and Daniel in Baal's Fall from Joseph Weigl or as Telasko in Fernand Cortez from Gaspare Spontini .

When the opera theater changed tenants, he retired in 1821.

Vogl and Schubert

Through Franz von Schober , a friend of Franz Schubert, he met Schubert in 1817 and was fascinated by his songs. A kind of friendship developed, despite the age difference of almost thirty years, which Vogl Schubert had ahead of him. Vogl contributed significantly to the dissemination of Schubert's songs, organized performances and concert tours. He sang Schubert's songs, who accompanied him on the piano in an inimitable way, which made him one of the best contemporary Schubert interpreters alongside his pupil Carl von Schönstein . After Schubert's death (1828) he took care of his estate and brought out the cycle Die Schöne Müllerin , and he also took care of the composer's other songs.

The Linz Musikverein made Franz Schubert and Johann Michael Vogl honorary members.

Private

As early as 1814, a serious gout disease made itself felt, despite which he retained his energy.
He married late, in 1826, the 32 years younger Kunigunde Rosa (daughter of the former director of the Belvedere Gallery), with whom he had a daughter, and died exactly 12 years to the day after Franz Schubert.
