Paul Stefan (born November 25, 1879 in Brno , Austria-Hungary ; † November 12, 1943 in New York ; actually Paul Stefan Grünfeld , changed name to Paul Stefan Gruenfeld in 1906 ) was an Austrian music historian , writer, and music and dance critic.

Life

Paul Stefan became the son of the leather goods manufacturer, member of the Moravian state parliament and Turkish consul Arnold Abraham Grünfeld (December 24, 1848 - May 17, 1919) and his wife Annie, née Haas (May 23, 1859 - December 27, 1936) Crown land Moravia of the Danube Monarchy born. The parents converted to the Catholic faith. His younger brother was the economist Ernst Grünfeld . In 1898 he moved to Vienna with his family.

Paul Stefan studied philosophy, law, art history and music at the University of Vienna and was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD. Privately he took music lessons from Arnold Schönberg and Hermann Graedener . From 1904 to 1910 Stefan worked as secretary of the Central Association of Austrian Industrialists . During the First World War , he first served as an officer in a cavalry unit and was later assigned to the war archives.

Paul Stefan was one of the most notable modern music writers and critics of his time. From 1921 onwards he wrote for the Musikblätter des Anbruch and from 1922 was Paul Amadeus Pisk's successor until the magazine was discontinued in 1937, its chief editor. He was also a music and dance critic for many years for the Viennese newspapers Die Hour and Die Bühne as well as for other European and American newspapers, including the Neue Zürcher Zeitung and Musical America. Yet he was “basically neither a praise nor a blasphemer; but his judgment, of an almost French delicacy and lucidity, was certain. Many laypeople thank his essays, notes and notes about concerts for their knowledge of what music is. "

In 1922 he was one of the founding members of the International Society for New Music, along with Rudolf Réti, Egon Wellesz and others, and subsequently held the post of Vice President of the Austrian Section for several years. He also worked as a lecturer at the Reinhardt Seminar in Vienna.

After the “Anschluss” of Austria in 1938, as a Jew and because of his anti- National Socialist articles, he had to emigrate. He first went to Winterthur in Switzerland for half a year and then lived in Paris until the occupation of France in 1940, where he mainly worked for radio. The next stop on his flight was Lisbon, where Stefan wrote a book on Portuguese music on behalf of the government and translated some of his works into Portuguese.

In April 1941 he arrived in the USA , where he continued to work successfully as a music journalist and lecturer.

Paul Nettl , Erika Wagner and Hugo Jacobi spoke at the funeral service organized for Stefan on March 11, 1944 . Rudolf Kolisch , Lona Friedman and Fritz Jahoda provided the musical accompaniment.

Paul Stefan had been married to the contralto Jella Braun-Fernwald since 1940 .

The revocation of the doctorate by the National Socialists was reversed by a resolution of the Senate of the University of Vienna on April 10, 2003.
