Gerhard Scheit (* 1959 in Vienna ) is an Austrian academic author and essayist .

Live and act

After studying music, Scheit studied theater studies, German, philosophy and music in Vienna and Berlin. He has taught at several universities in Austria and lives as a freelance author and essayist in Vienna. His research focuses initially on the history of drama and musical drama as well as anti-Semitism in the history of literature and music, and since the mid-1990s studies on a critical theory of constitutional and international law. Starting with Theodor W. Adorno , Max Horkheimer and Franz Neumann , he regards Marx's critique of political economy as well as Freudian psychoanalysis as a prerequisite for socio-critical analysis. He places particular emphasis on the term "racket" - as a counter-term to that of law and sovereignty in civil society, it serves him above all to define the National Socialist and jihadist movements more precisely.

He published in the 1990s regularly in the magazine concretely , and later mainly regularly among others in the anti-German magazine Bahamas and on the website Café-Critique . In 2012, together with Manfred Dahlmann, he founded the "Zeitschrift für Ideologiekritik" sans phrase , which increasingly turns to the critique of existentialism and is published by Ça ira Verlag in Freiburg and Vienna . Scheit edited several volumes of the work by the writer Jean Améry published by Klett-Cotta .

In 2016, Gerhard Scheit received the Theodor Kramer Prize together with Stefan Horvath .
