Anton Kuerti
Anton Emil Kuerti (born July 21, 1938 in Vienna ) is a Canadian pianist , music teacher and composer of Austrian origin. From a pianistic point of view, he is considered a Beethoven and Schumann specialist.
Anton Kuerti is the son of the physicist Gustav Kürti . The family had to flee Austria because of their Jewish origins . Kuerti grew up in the USA . He studied piano and composition in Cambridge, Massachusetts , Cleveland, and Philadelphia . Arthur Loesser , Rudolf Serkin and Mieczysław Horszowski were among his teachers . Kuerti has lived in Canada since 1965 for political and cultural reasons . He was heavily involved in the United States against the Vietnam War . He is intensively involved in human rights organizations. He maintains close collaboration with Canadian radio.
As a pianist, Kuerti focuses on German-Austrian classical music, but also on the music of the 19th century, especially the music of Robert Schumann. In addition to his concert activities in the USA and Canada, Kuerti has also given concerts in Europe, including in the German Democratic Republic , including in 1974 as part of the Zwickau Symphony Concerts. Kuerti has recorded the most important solo and concert works by Robert Schumann on CD. In 2007 he received the Robert Schumann Prize of the City of Zwickau for his dedicated work for Robert Schumann's work .
On October 17, 2013, Kuerti suffered a stroke during a concert in Miami . Since then he has been in the recovery phase.
As an exceptional pianist who avoids spectacular performances and oversized concert halls, Kuerti maintains a “sensible” way of dealing with the masters of the past. He represents and lives the attitude in his concerts: "The important thing is not to be pedantic and dictatorial with the music, but to make it intelligent and understandable." Kuerti is the holder of the Order of Canada .
