Major Frederick Whitfield Barrett (born June 20, 1875 in Cork , Ireland ; died November 7, 1949 in Swindon , United Kingdom ) was a British polo player . He also trained racehorses for the three British kings George V , Edward VIII and George VI .
Life
Barrett was the son of William Thomas Barrett. He served in the 15th Royal Hussars Regiment (15th / 19th The King's Hussars) and was a successful rider of obstacle races . He started playing polo in 1902 when he was stationed with his regiment in India.
With the English team he took part in the Westchester Cup in 1914 and 1921 . After a long series of defeats, the English team was successful in 1914. In 1919 he won the Roehampton Trophy for polo.
Barrett took part with the British team in the 1920 Olympics in Antwerp . The British team beat Spain in the final and won the gold medal. At the Olympic Games in Paris in 1924, he won the bronze medal with the British team.
After his military service, Barrett became a racehorse trainer. His horse "Annadale" won the Scottish Grand National in 1931 .
Barrett was married to Isobel Caroline Edwardes, daughter of William Edwardes, Lord Kensingtons and Grace Elizabeth Johnstone-Douglas, from August 17, 1904 . The two lived in Wroughton Hall, Wiltshire . The couple had two children:
- Bridget Winifred Barrett (1905-1933)
- Denis Hugh Bryan Barrett (born 1911)
Barrett died on November 7, 1949.
