Pavel Gerasimowitsch Lisizian

Pawel Gerassimowitsch Lisizian ( Russian Павел Герасимович Лисициан ; born November 6, 1911 in Vladikavkaz ; † July 6, 2004 in Moscow ) was a Russian - Armenian baritone . Internationally he was considered the most important Soviet opera and lieder singer of this voice range of his generation.

Lisizian studied at the Leningrad Conservatory and made his debut in 1935 at the Mali ("Little") Theater . In 1937 he sang at the Yerevan Opera , from 1940 he became a member of the Bolshoi Theater troupe for a quarter of a century . In the 1950s and 1960s there were numerous recordings in which Lisizian shone alongside the greatest of his colleagues ( Reisen , Nelepp , Archipowa , Vishnevskaya ). The singer has also made guest appearances in the West, even at the Metropolitan Opera . After finishing his singing activities he devoted himself to teaching for a while.

Lisizian's voice was characterized by a particularly powerful emission and a very pure, metallic timbre , like a trumpet . His word stress and articulation were also very precise.

In 1988 he was awarded the Star of Friendship of Nations in gold in the GDR .
