Georgi Mikhailovich Nelepp ( Russian Георгий Михайлович Нэлепп ; born April 7 . Jul / 20th April  1904 greg. In Bobruiki , Chernigov Governorate , Russian Empire ; † 18th June 1957 in Moscow ) was a Soviet opera singer (tenor). From 1944 until his death, he was the star of the Bolshoi Theater .

Life

Nelepp initially wanted to devote himself to a military career and studied topography at the army school in Leningrad . Because of his remarkable voice, however, he was encouraged to turn to singing professionally. In 1926 he was accepted at the Leningrad Conservatory and in 1929 he made his debut as Lensky from Eugene Onegin at GATOB . His excellent technique and his very adaptable timbre allowed him to master even the most difficult roles of the Russian and international lyrical-dramatic repertoire in the following years. The one with the Stalinism compromised singer (his stage partner 1950s, Galina Vishnevskaya , described him in her autobiography as a schemer and informer) came in the 1940s to the highest honors and was awarded in 1947 as "Soviet people's artist". In 1957 he died unexpectedly of heart failure, but at this point in time - also due to the de-Stalinization - his artistic star was already sinking.
