Sergey Muravyov-Apostol ( Russian Сергей Иванович Муравьёв-Апостол ., Scientific transliteration Sergei Ivanovich Murav'ëv-Apostol , born September 28 . Jul / 9. October  1795 greg. In Saint Petersburg , † July 13 jul. / 25th July  1826 greg. Ibid) was the leader of the Southern League in the Decembrist revolt .

Life

Murawjow-Apostol was the son of Ivan Matwejewitsch Murawjow-Apostol (1768-1856), a writer and member of the Russian Academy , who was the Russian ambassador in Spain and Hamburg. Like other Decembrists, Sergei knew the living conditions in Western Europe. He grew up with his siblings in Paris , France . They did not return to Russia until 1810 with their mother, who died a short time later .

Sergei took part in the Patriotic War against Napoleon I with his older brother Matwei . He quickly made a career because he stood out for his courage, and at the age of 27 was already a lieutenant colonel . He commanded the 2nd Battalion in Vasilkovo in the Kiev Governorate .

Here he learned of the death of Alexander I , the uprising in Saint Petersburg and its suppression. Nonetheless, he mobilized his troops, believing that all over the country those forces would rise up that were under the influence of the secret societies .

Not everyone was as determined as he was, however. His march was a rampage against the new tsar I. Nicholas , as a result, his brother Hippolyte (20 years old and just ordered a suite of the tsar) suicide committed, he himself on the gallows ended and brother Matvei in Schlüsselburg was imprisoned before he was banished to Siberia .
