Hermann Becht (born March 19, 1939 in Karlsruhe , † February 12, 2009 in Marxzell ) was a German opera singer with a baritone voice .

Live and act

Hermann Becht studied singing with Emma Wolf-Dengel in Karlsruhe and with Josef Greindl in Saarbrücken and won first prize in the Berlin singing competition in 1968. He began his stage career in 1963 as a bassist at the Staatstheater Braunschweig , but switched to the lyrical Italian baritone subject, which he sang at the Staatstheater Wiesbaden since 1970 . After his appointment to the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in 1974, to which he had been a member of the ensemble for over 30 years, he switched to the subject of the hero baritone.

With many great roles in his field, from Rocco and Pizarro in Fidelio to Count Almaviva in Figaro , Telramund in Lohengrin , Holländer and Daland in the Flying Dutchman , Pogner in the Meistersinger , Hunding in the Walküre , the title role in Gianni Schicchi , Orest in Elektra , the Princes in Prince Igor and the Wozzeck , Becht was represented in the repertoire of the Rhine Opera. Guest performance contracts connected him with the Bavarian State Opera and the Vienna State Opera . In Munich he sang in the world premieres of the operas Lou Salomé by Giuseppe Sinopoli (1981), Belshazar by Volker David Kirchner (1986) and Ubu Rex by Krzysztof Penderecki (1991) and at the Schwetzingen Festival in 1994 in the world premiere of the opera Sansibar by Eckehard Mayer .

Guest appearances have taken Becht to the opera houses in Stuttgart and Hamburg , the Covent Garden Opera in London , the Metropolitan Opera New York and many other important music stages.

He was also successful as a concert and lieder singer. He was considered a great Wagner interpreter on stage and sang Alberich in the ring tetralogy at the Bayreuth Festival 1979–1980 and 1983–1986 , and from 1981–1983 also Kurwenal in Tristan and Isolde . At the Salzburg Festival in 1984, Becht took part in a concert performance of the opera Die Gezeichen by Franz Schreker .

In 1987 he made a guest appearance at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna as Alberich; He had other guest appearances at the operas of Chicago (1986 as Klingsor) and San Francisco , at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow, at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona (1989 as Waldner in Arabella ), at the Grand Théâtre de Genève (1985) the opera houses of Nantes (1989) and Lyon (1987).

In the 1980s, Becht performed at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe and at the Ettlinger Schlossfestspiele . His last roles included Hunding in Die Walküre in 1998 at the Bonn Opera House and Gloster in Lear by Aribert Reimann in 1999 at the Dresden State Opera . Until recently he was involved in the summer festival in the Frauenalb monastery ruins .

For a short time, Becht taught at the Karlsruhe University of Music . He died unexpectedly in Marxzell and was buried in the cemetery in Marxzell-Schielberg.
