The Ettlingen Castle Festival has been an annual open-air theater festival in the city of Ettlingen since 1979 . More than 100 events take place from June to August in the baroque courtyard of Ettlinger Schloss . The organizer is the city of Ettlingen, which is supported by a Friends of the Castle Festival as well as by several sponsors and supported by the state of Baden-Württemberg . The average number of visitors is 34,500.

The festival was founded in 1979 on the initiative of the actor Kurt Müller-Graf - who was also artistic director until 1991 - together with the then mayor Erwin Vetter . Fritzdieter Gerhards followed as director until 2002. From 2003 to 2006 Jürgen Flügge was entrusted with the management, from 2007 to 2018 Udo Schürmer was director. Solvejg Bauer has been the first woman to lead the festival since the 2019 season. The general manager works on a fee basis and stages at least one play per year herself.

Every year until 2018 three main productions were offered, from 2019 four main productions, namely a musical , a play and a children's play; Newly added from 2019 is an opera or operetta under the heading "Volksoper" . There is also an extensive children's and youth program.

In September 2018 the director Solvejg Bauer took over the management of the castle festival. While the existing program of musicals, drama and family programs will be continued, an additional section was created with the Volksoper talent factory. Young opera singers stand together with a citizen choir of up to 120 people, consisting of Ettlingen citizens, on the castle courtyard stage. The 19 performances of WA Mozart's opera Die Zauberflöte achieved a total occupancy rate of 92.3%. 2019 is also the most successful season in 20 years due to the growth in the number of viewers in the other categories. [[.]] Networking and artistic exchange with the city's population has also been strengthened: Among other things, with the implementation of the Culture Makes Strong project by the Federal Ministry of Education and research, the educational theater offer for children and young people was further expanded. In the family play The Secret Garden, for example, over 70 children were on stage in changing line-ups. With the new directorship, technical innovations were also introduced. For example, a new round roof was installed in the castle courtyard, which spans the stage area and the grandstand equally. In this way, the orchestra and band can be placed in the courtyard so that they are visible to the public. In the 2020 season, the program includes the musical The King and I , the operetta Die Fledermaus , the family play Prinz und Bettelknabe based on the novel of the same name by Mark Twain in the castle courtyard, the play to be or not in the castle garden hall as well as smaller programs for adults and children in the interior of the baroque palace.

The Castle Festival is part of the Open-Air Theater Working Group, which has existed since 1969 . The other members are: Gandersheimer Domfestspiele , Bad Hersfeld Festival , Burgfestspiele Bad Vilbel , Kreuzgangspiele Feuchtwangen , Castle Festival Jagsthausen , Burgfestspiele Mayen , Rathen , Freilichtspiele Schwäbisch Hall and Luisenburg Festival Wunsiedel .
