action

The farmer Haug Tausendschlag, like many other farmers in the country, suffered greatly under the rule of their landlord , the knight Wertolt, the Wüterich . When he once again has to go to dungeon without justification, his son Trenk can no longer stand it and leaves the house at night. Together with his piglet, he decides to move to the city. According to the legal custom “City air makes you free!” He would be a free person if he managed to live in the city for a year without being caught by Wertolt's captors. By chance he meets the knight Dietz von Durgelstein, whose son Zink is supposed to begin training as a knight with Dietz's brother-in-law, Ritter Hans. Since he is too scared for that, he and Trenk swap roles so that he now works as a page at Hohenlob Castle.

main characters

Trenk Tausendschlag: The young farmer's son can no longer bear the cruelty of Knight Wertolt and tries to save his family through the city law. Now he pretends to be the nephew of knight Hans to become a knight. Trenk is very hardworking and kind-hearted.
Piglet: The little piglet is Trenk's pet. Trenk took it with him so that it would not be confiscated by Wertolt's people. Due to its curious nature, the animal is sometimes a bit annoying, but still a loyal companion.
Momme Mumm: When Trenk first met him, he thought Momme Mumm was a girl. In truth, however, this is a juggler who excels at magic tricks and illusions. Since girls were not allowed to perform at this time, Momme sometimes disguises herself. In times of need Trenk can always count on him and his juggler friends.
Thekla: The daughter of knight Hans and, according to his belief, Trenk's cousin. She sees through Trenk, but does not reveal him when he teaches her to become a knight. Thekla was supposed to learn to cook soup, play the harp and embroider, but she would rather be a knight. Thekla is good at shooting peas with a sling.
Knight Hans von Hohenlob: Knight Hans is the absolute opposite of Ritter Wertolt. He's a bit stout, absent-minded, but definitely a good-hearted person. His page Trenk is very important to him and he thinks very highly of him.
Ritter Wertolt, the Wüterich: He likes to call himself Wertolt, the noble one, but this adjective really doesn't suit him. While his farmers hardly have anything to eat, he lives in luxury on his castle and demands taxes from them that they cannot afford at all. However, he doesn't care at all and he lets her flogged for it, which explains the nickname of Trenk's father, Tausendschlag. Wertolt's main aim is the lands of the knight Hans and tries everything to bring him out of favor with the prince, which Trenk can always prevent.

Differences from the book

In addition to some episodes, the plot of which was written specifically for the series, some parts of the book have also been slightly changed. In the book, fifteen robbers are hired by knight Hans as castle soldiers, while their number shrinks to three in the series. The two stupid helpers from Ritter Wertolt are not mentioned in the book, and his squire does not play a major role.
