geography

Fetsund in the municipality of Fet

Fet is located on the eastern shore of Lake Øyeren , where the river Glomma flows into the lake. The river delta formed in this way is the largest inland river delta in Europe and extends over the shorter sea width to the opposite bank. The tree trunks that had been lifted in the river were taken out of the river shortly before the river estuary into the lake and transported from this point by rail; this timber drift operation was maintained until 1985. The existing buildings were largely preserved and are now used as a museum and cultural center.

prehistory

Surname

The name Fit was first recorded in 1321 as ("a Fit") and is the term for a "good pasture" in Old Norse .

Fet received as part of the division of Norway into Formannskapsdistricts on January 1, 1838, the status of a Norwegian municipality. On July 1, 1929, parts of the municipality of Fet were separated and combined to form the new municipality of Rælingen .

coat of arms

The municipality's coat of arms is from more recent times and was officially awarded on December 19, 1986. It shows a raft hook , as it was often used in the area to pull the tree trunks cut in the surrounding forests and drifting in the water while drifting on the rivers and lakes to the sawmills . The lumbermen used long poles with hooks to work with the drifting logs. The colors of the coat of arms are green and silver, as the place name is derived from the old word for a lush meadow (green) by a lake (silver). Comparable coats of arms can also be found in Åsnes , Jondal , Marker and Nordre Land .
