Lillestrøm is a Norwegian municipality in the province ( Fylke ) Viken , which has existed since January 1, 2020. It consists of the former municipalities of Skedsmo , Fet and Sørum and has 85,983 inhabitants (as of February 27, 2020). The administrative seat is the place of the same name Lillestrøm .

geography

Lillestrøm is located in the Nedre Romerike region in northeast Oslo. The community area is largely hilly and forested in the non-built-up areas. Part of the municipality is also moorland. Norway's longest river, the Glomma, flows through Lillestrøm . Parts of Lake Øyeren are also within the municipal boundaries. Together with the rivers Glomma and Nitelv , it forms the largest inland delta in Northern Europe and the Øyeren nature reserve. It is home to many plant and animal species.

With around 87,500 inhabitants, the municipality was the ninth most populous municipality in Norway when it was founded in 2020. The majority of the population is concentrated in the south, i.e. the built-up urban area around the city of Lillestrøm to the east of Oslo. Lillestrøm is made up of the towns of Blaker, Enebakkneset, Fetsund , Fjellsrud, Frogner, Fan, Kjeller , Leirsund, Lillestrøm , Lindeberg, Lundermoen, Lørenfallet, Sekdsmokorset, Skjetten, Sørumsand, Strømmen , Østersund and Åkrene.

Europastraße 6 runs through the municipal area . In the city of Lillestrøm as well as in Strømmen there are train stations with connections to Oslo and the rest of the east .

history

The municipality of Lillestrøm was founded on January 1st, 2020 as part of the municipal reform in Norway . It includes the former municipalities of Skedsmo , Fet and Sørum . The Norwegian Ministry of Local Government and Modernization announced on December 19, 2017 that the name of the new municipality would be Lillestrøm.

In the 1990s, the oldest boat ever found in Norway, the so-called Sørumbåten , was discovered in Sørum .

economy

Lillestrøm and Strømmen used to be important industrial centers in the region. In Strømme, for example, production was carried out for the rail and automotive industries. Today the most important branch of industry in the municipality is the graphic industry, as well as mechanical engineering and the chemical industry. In Kjeller Additional facilities include public research sites. The farms of the former municipality of Skedsmo are among the farms with the largest land ownership in Norway.

In the city of Lillestrøm is the largest exhibition and trade fair center in Norway, the Norges Varemesse (German: Norway's goods fair).

There are three silver-colored dugout canoes on the municipality's coat of arms. It should be reminiscent of Sørumbåten . The boat is around 2200 years old and was discovered in Sørum in the 1990s . In addition, the coat of arms is used to represent life on the river, as the economy on the river was important for all three of the former municipalities.
