Olaf Bernstengel
Olaf Bernstengel (born May 13, 1952 in Dresden ; † January 27, 2020 there ) was a German puppet theater historian, author and puppeteer.
Life
Bernstengel graduated from high school in Dresden-Plauen in 1970 and then studied philosophy and theater studies in Leipzig . From 1977 to 1982 he worked at the Magdeburg puppet theater . Between 1981 and 1994 he was the deputy director of the Dresden Puppet Theater Collection .
Bernstengel received his doctorate in 1991 at the “Karl Friedrich Wilhelm Wander” University of Education in Dresden on the subject of the Saxon traveling puppet theater between 1800 and 1933 and was a freelance puppeteer at the Fundus-Marionetten-Dresden puppet theater founded in 1982 , first with Detlef Kaminsky and later as a solo player. Bernstengel wrote several books on the subject of puppet and marionette theater and was also the "intellectual father of the Central German Marionette Theater Museum in Bad Liebenwerda " as a professional advisor . "In the Museum of the Puppet Theater Magdeburg , Villa p. , Bernstengel was significantly involved in the permanent exhibition on the history of puppetry, which opened in 2012.
From 1994 to 2011 Bernstengel was the artistic director of the International Puppet Theater Festival in Mistelbach, Austria . In addition, he was artistic director of the International Puppet Theater Festival in Elbe-Elster-Land for over 20 years until 2018 . He died in Dresden in 2020 after a long illness.
Political
According to the files that have been preserved in the agency of the Federal Commissioner for the Stasi Records (BStU) , Bernstengel was hired as an unofficial employee of the GDR Ministry for State Security (MfS) in 1975 .
