Rudskulen Bygdeborg is a fortification from the Iron Age , which is dated to around 400–550 AD. It is located on Rudskulen, a hill named after the Rud farm in the municipality of Lillestrøm , between Øgarsgrenda in Bold and Torgenrud in Skedsmo in the Romerike region in Fylke Viken in Norway . Bygdeborg or Tjuveborg is the Norwegian name for hill castles on mountains that are inaccessible from several sides (usually three).

The remains of the fortress Rudskulen are on a steep hill with a sloping flank in the west and very steep slopes in the east and south. It is only accessible from the north. A mighty barrier wall extends over a length of 56 meters from northeast to southwest, about 3.5 meters wide and still 0.4 to 1.2 meters high today. There are two openings in the wall, but it is difficult to tell whether these are entrances or gaps created later by landslides and decay. At a right angle, in the easternmost part, there is a 100 meter long wall that has fallen into serious disrepair.

In the northwest there is an entrance about two meters wide. It is possible that this opening through which the path to Torgenrud leads today has always been an entrance. There are several short walls in the south. Inside the castle walls is a seven by nine meter cistern . It was originally much deeper than it is today.

Comparable systems

There are around 300 such structures in Norway, and they are particularly concentrated in the Oslo area and in Rogaland and Trøndelag . Most of the fortifications dating from AD 100–600 were probably in use at the same time. A guard had a good panoramic view from facilities like Bygdeborg on Rudskulen.

use

There are several theories about the original function of the systems. Although the buildings suggest a defensive structure, it is difficult to secure because of its size. Therefore, the Fornborgar are compared with Slavic castles , which, like the later medieval cities, were protected dwelling places and religious centers. The function as a refuge is also considered for some, but it should be a uniform reason for use.
