Temnikov ( Russian Темников , Moksha Темникав , Temnikaw ) is a small town in the Republic of Mordovia ( Russia ) with 7243 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located about 160 km northwest of the republic capital Saransk on the Mokscha , a right tributary of the Oka, which flows into the Volga .
Temnikow is the administrative center of the Rajons of the same name .
history
Temnikow was founded as a fortified city eight kilometers downstream in the 14th century. In 1536 the town was moved to its current location, the old place has been preserved as the village of Stary Gorod (Old Town). This makes Temnikow the oldest city in Mordovia.
In 1779 the place received today's town charter as the administrative center of a district ( Ujesds ) of the Tambov governorate .
In the city there was the POW camp 58 for German prisoners of war of the Second World War . It is said to have been the first prisoner of war camp in the Soviet Union .

Culture and sights
Three kilometers northwest of temnikov located on the left Moksha river shores, in 1659, founded Sanaksar-Virgin Birth Monastery ( Рождество-Богородичный Санаксарский монастырь / Roschdestwo-Bogoroditschny Sanaksarski monastyr and shortly also Sanaksar Monastery ), in the 18th century one of the most important religious centers Of Russia.
The city has a local museum .
economy
In Temnikow there is a light bulb factory, companies in the wood industry and wood processing (paper / wallpaper) and the food industry.
Personalities
- Fyodor Ushakov (1745–1817), admiral , saint of the Russian Orthodox Church ; spent the last years of his life on his property not far from Temnikow and is buried in the Sanaksar monastery there
- Theodor von Sanaksar (Iwan Ignatjewitsch Uschakow, 1718–1791), saint of the Russian Orthodox Church, Admiral Uschakow's uncle; also buried in the Sanaksar monastery
