The city is located about 70 km southwest of the republic capital Saransk at the confluence of the Insarka in the Issa in the river system of the Volga .
Insar is the administrative center of the Rajons of the same name .
history
Insar was first mentioned in 1648 as a "fortress" with associated settlement and in 1780 received city rights. In 1926 the place lost its town charter, but in 1958 it was granted again.
