Insar ( Russian Инсар , Moksha Инсара , Insara ) is a small town in the Republic of Mordovia ( Russia ) with 8687 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located about 70 km southwest of the republic capital Saransk at the confluence of the Insarka in the Issa in the river system of the Volga .

Insar is the administrative center of the Rajons of the same name .

history

Insar was first mentioned in 1648 as a "fortress" with associated settlement and in 1780 received city rights. In 1926 the place lost its town charter, but in 1958 it was granted again.
